A little history
Mother's Day as we celebrate it today has its origins in ancient traditions of honoring mothers and motherhood. However, the modern version of Mother's Day is often attributed to Anna Jarvis, an American activist, in the early 20th century.
Anna Jarvis began advocating for a special day to honor mothers after the death of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, in 1905. Ann Reeves Jarvis was a social activist who established Mother's Day Work Clubs to help improve health and social conditions for families in rural West Virginia communities.
After her mother's death, Anna Jarvis undertook on May 12, 1907 to have a special day recognized to honor all mothers.
She began lobbying public authorities, politicians and businesses to support the idea of a day dedicated to mothers. In 1914, her efforts bore fruit when U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signed an official proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in the United States.
Mother's Day quickly spread around the world, although celebration dates and traditions may vary from country to country. In many places, it's an opportunity for children to express their love and gratitude to their mothers by giving her gifts, cards or spending time with her.
